Sporting my white floppy hat, the boys and I arrived at Churchill Downs at 9 a.m. and started placing bets on the races. I didn't win any money, but my brother and some of his friends won money on about 6/11 races. Although the weathermen said it was going to rain all day, we never felt a drop. In the end, Mine That Bird (the underdog) won the final race and one of my brother's friends, Joe, placed a bet for his sister on the winning horse and she won $500. I just wish I would have worn more comfortable shoes.</span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 294px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgglTT3dEkdcoKg-NaI_MiolwJ3DYFcSmmW7gIY6lBd_qHA4A6vr42chQ-Z9W9OsoQmZLSMK2TuU2PDmr1tu7KEZKOf1VMz6pgM-kuTS5yde49PYJIMW6pTXhl_nCIqmNPn2iyJjpsza4DK/s400/CIMG1870.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331767240295730946" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 260px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwgl4d3XTpRLocBPCn_AsycaWN8rkZuN30Axx7m9f6DETE-2UwBbq9TV-ivKm1v4dj30E4l0bb0jKR0a_GIZRIXdP925V3qYBUNy0CKEpb-r62qMNCGn3loEtc7c4y83AzUee7i32YH8K-/s400/CIMG1844.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331766469042343138" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I've been rethinking my mini-portfolio, but I haven't made any final designs yet. That will be a project for next weekend, because I have a very busy week this week. I'm working on getting photos for my evergreen feature, profiling a man who does autopsies, but those won't be taken until some time next week, so you'll be seeing the first designs then. Also, I'm working on an illustration for the screen department of </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.voxmagazine.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Vox </span></a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">about "sexting", which you'll have to read the story to find out about, but the name pretty much explains what that is. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Response</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I'm really happy with the way the presentations went yesterday. The people from Meredith gave us a lot of great feedback and it was great to hear their opinions about the work we did. I'm really happy with what we've created, and really wanted to show it off, and they seemed to like our product.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> It was great to miss class all day too. We had a little Cinco de Mayo/projects being done celebration last night that was really fun. Overall, our group worked really well together, so it was a great experience. I'm so glad to be finished with copyediting for the time being. We took our final copyediting/proofreading exam for Mag Editing on Friday, and it felt so great to be finished with it. I think everyone in the class will agree with me on that. Only one more week of classes and then finals week, which ends on Tuesday for me :) I can't believe I'm graduating in less than 2 weeks. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">MagCulture</span></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Creative Director of </span><a href="http://www.wired.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">US Wired </span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Scott Dadich, who spoke at </span><a href="http://www.editorialdesign.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">EDO</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> last week, showed a sketch of a cover featuring Martha Stewart making a Wii-shaped cake, that is pretty amusing. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 285px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH8CxWMAWCGqIW1XBr7_lxikoF6NUzgz1ia40jSDy-ffxRwnda0wmCUMvIbc-Lplp7A1hUGW14__THZ8xhyphenhyphennmHsvaITCGtEdyus5CAMdChEy6zAl-qbOIhY9CFqD74n4lWlOranFCR_Zkp/s400/3490386519_5703f010f3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331764100197491042" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Also, the </span><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/?p=3608#more-3608"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">shortlisted and winners</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> of the ASME Awards, as well as a photo from </span><a href="http://www.cosmit.it/tool/home.php?s=0,2,67,71,75"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Salone del Mobile</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">, which was part of the design exhibits in Milan last week. For example: </span></span></span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 317px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4hyyUsjA0PG3KSzCLImebYI2MbGIb6kfhWBFA4RplT-zWLGqleicPx7uFVByXmm-fSPhSPfs-AXIUbtcCATBG5vsoL2ZmIaw7R7h0vrIxQCEIZ62mtop2TQLrNNsmVqzI7dhdESu3l7Ni/s400/CMYCMYh8_OFC_600x757.shkl.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329814975154049634" />design.by.emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17330692835042103575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6216328095942393855.post-85845796161317979322009-04-19T19:13:00.000-07:002009-04-19T19:58:58.332-07:00Week 13<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">This Week</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I designed the screen department for <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Vox</span> this weekend and finished designing my mini-portfolio. We also got a lot of the Storage Web site done this weekend and I learned a lot in Flash. It's a good feeling. I also finished putting my actual portfolio together to take with me this week. I won't be posting any <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Storage</span> materials until it's all over with, just because we want it to be shown to the corporation before anyone else really sees it. Here is a page from my mini-portfolio. I wanted to keep it simple, so there aren't many elements on the pages.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho6cht8rbTqFjFyEUTEsxRnQxWBNX0GbkDzhrAl_SNFrCIbecTyxrqn4Z3vzM6tS9wZ9xU0yI-Uo1DwdaEt7NoCHEvzgJ5TpPKtQ-Rq7S7hCC6yPUpRQhYxdsJoxzWPzyCCUqwgRY0APba/s400/mini11.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326602284753364898" /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Response</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Storage is coming along really well. It's been a lot of work but it's really paid off so far. I made all of my pieces for the site in Flash, and I'm really glad I can use it now. I'm thinking about making my entire website in it, but I'm not sure if I will do it for the class or not. This weekend was definitely dedicated to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Storage</span> and getting everything ready for my trip this week. I'm excited to go to Birmingham, and especially excited to go on my own because it will be fun to explore on my own. I'll be missing 3 days of class, so it was a little hectic trying to get everything completed before I leave, but definitely worth it. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">MagCulture</span></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This week on MagCulture, there is a lot about David Hillman, who spoke at the </span><a href="http://www.dandad.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">D&AD</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> contest saying </span><a href="http://www.designweek.co.uk/Articles/141955/David+Hillman+says+today%E2%80%99s+magazines+are+boring+.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">all modern magazines are boring</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">. It's a really cool example (pretty feminine) of a way you can make your blog unique and inspiring. Ever since I started blogging this semester I have been wanting to find time to make it look great, and I'm hoping once graduation comes, I'll find time to dedicate to it. I think it can really show someone's personality (like this one), and I love the name of the blog as well. This week the blogger put some cool </span><a href="http://www.impactist.com/photo_pgs/strings/strings.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">string pieces</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> for viewers to see. I presented my website to the class last week and received some really helpful feedback which helped me with editing it over the weekend. I had a VERY productive weekend. I made a list of about 25 school-related things I needed to get done and I finished all of them. Somehow, I still feel like there are a thousand things I have to do. There are only a few weeks left before graduation, so you'd think the work load would be decreasing, but that's not the case. But I guess I've survived for 11 or 12 (I can't keep track anymore) MANY WEEKS, so I can make it another 4-5 weeks. The only thing I have been working on over the weekend/beginning of this week is the first drafts of the Earth Day feature for <span style="font-style: italic;">Vox </span>which will run in the 4/16 issue. It's a ROUGH draft, obviously, so be sure to look for it when it comes out, and I'll post it as it comes along. I'm looking forward to going home over Easter weekend :)<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 259px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYfR3qceu1gD0p-Fxc-vT91B8_t5HGJ2D9NdyuHUD5RZUu9pFzrAxC5e890rrdOshERetdNGrFNSIddRY6u3hJEiFENEEV_wtud4pQBUXNOhgyeUuHpKKFMTIvpZvFAOEQBErgo4UAK8FC/s400/EARTHDAY.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322004161881816178" /></span><span style="font-size:100%;">Response<br />I had my one-on-one conference with Jan today and it went great. She gave me a lot of feedback about my strengths and even offered to help further me in the design world by putting in a good word for me with some people I will be interviewing with in the near future. This was probably the best part of my day because I always worry about this class, so I feel very relieved to know that my hard work is paying off and it's great to know that Jan thinks I'm doing a great job as well. I've started some sketches for what I want my mini-portfolio to look like, so that I can get it put together and leave it with some interviewers (right word?) at the end of this month. My editing class this morning was very eventful! Professor Rowe was just getting lecture started when the door opened and in walked a camera crew and some men dressed in suits to award her with the Keller Award (?) It's an award for outstanding teaching, so it's well-deserved. They also presented her with a check for $10,000! A few of the designers and me teared up a bit, it was so great! I felt like the Prize Patrol was coming in our classroom when they opened the door with this bright light and huge camera! Professor Rowe was so surprised and it was a really great moment.<br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><a href="http://magculture.com/blog">MagCulture</a><br />In the last week, MagCulture has posted some things about <a href="http://www.condenast.com/">Conde Nast</a> having to make cutbacks, the new mix 'n' match, interactive <a href="http://www.esquire.com/">cover</a> of <span style="font-style: italic;">Esquire</span>, which Maggie mentioned in her blog/to me, I can't quite remember, but it features Justin Timberlake, George Clooney and Barack Obama and the faces are cut into 3 flaps that you can switch out. Over break, I began work on my website, which I presented today. It's a great feeling knowing I can make a website now. This week I will be presenting my first draft of the Earth Day feature, which will be in the 4/16 issue of Vox, so I will post that as it comes along. We presented our first designs for the website project with the publishing group, Jan and John yesterday morning and everything went well. We received a lot of great feedback that will lead us in the right direction for our next designs. Overall, I think everyone was really pleased with what we had and the redesign of the logo. Also below is my department page for the 3/16 issue I never posted.</span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 344px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcqw092wtdeqjm-emSnYsLi0CLlfVyCFacnVnIYEMUeVutE7vNgx_rfHnnbX_MccR7XeMhF09eVuxsF9aUL9z_zvlXdKPSizmOBSMLZX1mEhVO3IaVX8WjNDZDskXa0VSCLKhfC84G73jl/s400/StephensFilmFrenzy.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320156144170380050" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 347px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-vnmeWBLMxEUS6IV0knoUCz_4zlTU_pjsoJzf_O9yfgheQYsclA7XoXSmVS3fZwKRwpl3UnXlAa1m2cwtmVRIGVdovWpICmSLoNqdh33i3AZ2btvyUOYW50wu6qdXAqzK-T8naA2HaJKF/s400/Producers.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320156161240104754" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Response<br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I've started speaking with Zachary Trover, who is the art director for </span><a href="http://www.pitch.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The Pitch</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> in Kansas City. Like I said last week, it was a little difficult but I think it worked out pretty well (except for the creepy close up of the guy)</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I also designed a St. Patrick's Day card for the bf. This is something I do all the time, no matter the occasion and sometimes for no occasion at all. Although this semester I've been slacking in the homemade card department since my schedule is so hectic. For some reason, Clint decided he would go all out this year and hardcore celebrate the holiday. I don't get it, because he's not Irish. So my card has the definition of an Irishman on it. This is the back page of the card. </span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx6fG2EeoT22aHMgwKEcEI1Z-WnSDCn8tKPmTGgqIGO1yj3vXFi2pe0o0f2jrmNBydkikxmZOtRaIFAwphyooZhYA1_zNu22du0C7sq1L1ZlHHBLsvCr8zg33yDvGRtssH0G6J2xkf5x6g/s400/ST+PATS.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314641666239473218" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I'm also working on some designs to show the publishing group tomorrow. We all work really well together (the designers always have and the publishers are beginning to get the hang of it) and Maggie is a super-organized art director, so I'm glad we have her as our leader. Everything is spelled out for us and she is doing a great job of communicating with the publishers. <br /></span></div></span><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhoW939yPNWMo7CfgC6BaFBmyIc7prSvgkoKUYOB0giQMfjvpSbnRAJPqf8H8SvJTXL4WR-wNtspnUDFqOZUsxKl1d84jaoWG3dgGNLo8oDnxK0wfwEN2gFQicZLwjKA3nAc0ysBGn7Doe/s400/STEP1(BED).jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314643815691588082" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW9aZyPnwo8iN06PAov9WV4qt_iabvoGFRmg-cPoJfaA_lS9idfCaUCLulkmV-0WYojJg13WxJrlJzOm0VvKD3TSvMTz_Xu2gpoOMxTzu9QJNhsMWHTs1r7v2sDldm6Jw5Za4VCf2IdC-I/s400/ALTERNATIVE.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314643807791907362" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH7MGwpcixiX8cVWgup4gKJHXDym4a1IZJvCGRWamElZDSv0tZZGycaJmqtyhkEUQoEQwF1VzowyidhQHGUGEJiQvZykwzpJGxb4sju0oKOnlb5-lN1DgluOAqFmdYSjd_3531FWCzcTi-/s400/LOOKER.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314643812204907410" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">R</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">esponse<br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I talked about my design process yesterday in lecture and after my classmates critiqued my logos, I chose 3 to redesign for Friday. I learned how to use Final Cut Pro. It was better than I thought it would be because designers Christy Solberg and Jena Anderson were in the class as well. If they hadn't been, I don't think I would have survived the boredom to be honest. We watched 12 hours of tutorials online, courtesy of "Brian", and learned how to make a short video. The video we cut from consisted of short interviews of everyone in the class and some B-roll taken by our instructor. We also had fun with the photo booth application on the luxuriously large Macs we got to use for the duration of the weekend. At times, it was hard to quit laughing at the pictures. This video is clips of Christy, Jena and I, explaining to the instructor (which you can't hear) that we have no experience with video editing tools (except Christy had some with iPhoto) Enjoy.</span></div><div><br /></div><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxobsQ0TDisVVN1fSqIw_Lukk-3l80GJnsrD5VLBt3_yfBhNT_IYtN-8pATe2QCCmmLEhi1Xmq4Qs-4FOjQGQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe>design.by.emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17330692835042103575noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6216328095942393855.post-81178434440023082392009-03-10T18:42:00.000-07:002009-03-12T16:39:24.326-07:00Week 7<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This Week(end)<br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I designed the department page for Screen. It was difficult because the story was a little confusing. The reporter did the interview, which took 6 hours, to find out from the source at the end that he did not want to be the focus of the story. The story had to be changed so that the secondary source was the main focus, but the photo selection was slim at this point. There was a picture of the second source that was really close up and also one that looked like his high school yearbook picture. We ended up using the photo of the first source as the dominant photo because it was more appealing, and used the second source's photo as the secondary photo. The page turned out o.k. in my opinion. There is a sidebar included too, which had some spacing issues, but I think it all worked out and we'll see on Thursday. Here are my final cover designs that I created for showing today as well. I drew inspiration from "Fast Food Nation".</span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj24_YJAEBpcP5H2-ndEVXIth75A6exmYnBOvvRiEJpTc5Iy_5_mIVJFeb__NnUQA-xdGVyV2QfNEo5S_uOBKduhWwhDptiVoaE-1pV_kQ6_0PVlAJDPkVgdi-yOsM6i9eZbmwUJ5bmkRkA/s400/3-26Cover3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312449333461715090" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju5W57hTFMoUSc1DM9BdzFGNKT3TTf2q3BBmPAkanUbpt05NtgmloBy05kqbTWIQI3yurN9zHUutJfoM0jGjAYNPr77jVL3NxiR-TIyGOIg5DBWefJH00qOdZujelY-GQKstEcCvm1BAZt/s400/3-26Cover5.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312449328482812626" /><div style="text-align: center;">I completed the 20/10 assignment this week. It was interesting to see how similar many of my classmates' design process were to my own. Many said they need to have some kind of sound in the background, wherever they are, and need to do a lot of brainstorming before actually sitting down at their computers and putting elements into a document. For some reason, when I'm designing, I need to be in my room (either sitting Indian-style on the floor or on my bed) with my headphones on. I usually look for inspiration in magazines, design books and commercials. After that, I do some sketches, then once I feel like I have a good idea of what I'm going for, I start designing on the computer. I go through many drafts before I'm happy with the outcome. It was great to hear everyone's process and maybe think about trying some of those things.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">MagCulture</span></a></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This week, Leslie takes a look at the final days of preparation for </span><a href="http://blog.colophon2009.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Colophon2009.</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">He features an exhibit showcasing 111 independent magazines called "We Make Magazines".</span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 277px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnnl0_cXkA21D2Voh-jEvvbUO3L5ZgnL-LaFo-U0Cq3BlwgZc5l2Z4CL7Pxe31K4R1nQFH-73iPHP3VB4dHzFsXlVQWA0h7HHI0Yuqi332XCE05QIBSElLwQMDuS3o71150nE60tw0zih6/s400/img_0882.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311749196244134322" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Leslie also talks about a talk coming up in London about "how to design really good magazine covers". I'm really happy with this clip. It's something that will add to my portfolio because it's a more serious clip, and before doing this, I felt like most of my clips were just fun and playful, which isn't so bad, but I'm glad to have something a little more serious to add. I designed this without the illustration at first, and then the editors decided they wanted an illustration to show where the Eraz Crossing is, because it's an area the story focuses on. So I went back and added the illustration and this is the final product. Now I'm just waiting for the publication to come out so I can see it in print. </span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaWOeJf4WIazCQkQ00k0V87oCS_h3AzKoTNef3ncCdU71GzBV3MhZHcArrcdTbWwBK4yLaQ8BxFBMuKEcC6MDIskj1WZmXHsINgl9m0OJ6qJ9xFqA6owkBMwDeIaWLNIePelrxKn0uWd-j/s400/GAZA.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309111790752563330" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVac8RLCWlVvKpwJfRslyQIfReX68MGfUgZGDHxwnrSW8oSDV1ZzI9Qj_RJVOr_ByF00hQD0ZBnAeDZcn_hmDiGn2qmepQVQcSvc17cw2y5wfDQ9bq7OF7VMOZN87-qXsKlUnQmCOujiBL/s400/GAZA2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309111794305342770" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">This week and last week in Advanced Design we have been perfecting our portfolios, and so I have been thinking about what my online portfolio will look like, as well as my mini-portfolio. It doesn't seem like it should be that difficult, but I'm having a hard time walking through my design process. I kind of just start thinking a lot about what I want my design to look like and then after I have a concrete concept, I look through magazines and our design books, as well as looking at advertisements and commercials to try and expand on my idea. After that, I just sit down and start designing on my computer, and it usually comes together in a couple of days. I don't start a design and finish it in the same day ever, because I want to have time to think about it while I'm in the process. I think it helps me put a lot more thought into it and helps me weed out any cliches or obvious designing I tend to turn to first. Also, I never sketch my designs before I go to design them in InDesign, but I'm going to for the 20/10 project, just because there are so many different ideas we have to come up with and it will be much easier to have it all in front of me instead of clicking through on the computer. I'm hoping this assignment will help me and give me another process to use when designing.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><br /><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/"></a></span></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">MagCulture.com</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">This week MagCulture talks about his </span><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/youandyours/items/05/2009_08_fri.shtml"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">interview</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> for BBC Radio 4 and the relaunch of </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Pop Magazine. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">He also shows a photo of Swedish magazine </span><a href="http://www.tarelugnt.se/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Tare Lungt</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">, which means "take it easy", which published its third issue as a tattoo! We will be producing an appealing, usable, and easy-t0-find website. It's more difficult that I thought it would be, but after speaking with Jan yesterday, I think I have a great concept, I just need to execute it really well before I present it to the publishers on Monday. I want to use the idea that readers are coming to the site or picking up the magazine because 1. They're already neat freaks and want new ways to organize and store things in their lives, or 2. They're very unorganized and are looking for help. SO, what I've come up with is a site designed to emphasize the "clutter to clean" philosophy. I still have some major work to do, but here are some of my first designs for a logo and splash pages, and what I'm revising. The idea is to open each story with a bright, bold image to introduce the stories online, and to use playful colors and clean typography.</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-size:9px;"><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:9px;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFFUAE5TT8kIGjKSaTydoL_zF1ixXTYqT8G2FrTmLywNckoDCX0C5d8zMbUbfVI2eXZlyaZ66fpHmSqpQB7igLeuLvfLNlEhwnJGqi6UnrY9WBwsjwNbF-5F7x6P8F2zsvnGtumgVWHk3D/s400/Feature3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303909328885777794" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwpIk0oQVyY84utNVdZjcJUj50ZbBL7qIw_B-M4BaFKrKZ6LGSNkOUQaszYqzyiA794C-7PMdCw0QnnFw9ys0lMjesCJtV-W6UKg-gEFHpHxqtfS_r3msaj9vCR1OK180ZLItA83fv8WTN/s400/Feature2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303909325708057730" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrcHiZUN0m8FRDBWcaDQIxPmNoKc86JzY_u6o442ZCGiOpRSWLmNltGoWKHIe25WKRrPiYSWKgSnd1fDGEa0ezJJOpUMr5X_qOMV8Z18-_pDj5Ze3VEZqeG-js0ztwj0Bi6YixSjkha6P0/s400/Feature1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303909324359746642" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix_n5sE8puaGTBCslOCccEjU9ge5Q90b_Cub_a-NDKP4MQIfd4MPNckybRBuNbwUWUaCBnyswnDkD6-kra8Vb8-lDCaYG5zQ2YNHujG9vdckLv4izBvfnnZgxypqPVHPZBN0eKaEHbB1i7/s400/StorageLogo.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303909318023129090" /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Response<br /></span></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This week we finished the rest of the history presentations. The one that struck me the most was Julia's about art director Otto Storch. His work was very creative in the way he used typography and photos/illustrations together. He seemed to have a fun eye for art and it really showed through in his designs in McCall's. I especially like the spread Julia showed where he placed the models on the page to look like they were standing inside a water paint kit, and the one where he took the same idea but put them in a painter's drawer. I was unable to find the photos but I found one of my other favorites to show.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:9px;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 295px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPAcNisSIFgItfJn4eCqAdL4_BICkUxCys8l1X_DqPn0aQebZIFMo3iZytCMDsara_0D5tAmtJypGbNclDqa2h5b0m-dWgA0iPaP07rquDhR5tk-TfAmfz6BPA3-fmlAsdCeTrkum0aln/s400/OTTO.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303919203129310290" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">MagCulture</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This week on </span><a href="http://magculture.com/blog"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Magculture</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">, Leslie is discussing upcoming exhibitions, including </span><a href="http://www.designmuseum.org/exhibitions/2009/brit-insurance-designs-of-the-year"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Designs of the Year</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> and </span><a href="http://blog.colophon2009.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Colophon 2009</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">. I was nervous anticipating the actual presentation, but learning about Brodovitch's interesting design techniques kept me distracted from my nerves. And when it came time for me to actually present, I wasn't so nervous after all. However, I think I could have done-away with a few dozen "umm"'s. I also thought the "Esky" character was entertaining and it's something that I never knew about Esquire, even though I read it. I took a completely different take on this design than I did for my first design. I wanted to play off of the economy side of the indie rocker story. I thought of the signs that say, "Will work for food", even thought it's a very sad idea thinking of who holds those signs, I thought I could switch it up and write "Will play for T.V." I had the idea of these artists playing for any medium just to be heard. Even if it means short pieces on television. I thought the colors resembled the indie music industry and also tied in with the photo well. This cover made me realize that I need to practice more with Illustrator, because I had some problems reworking the sign in the photo.</span><br /></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 344px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQetS1SmCi8teb9AC-TtsjEtzwbsD2aDUtfu7r92-tSmaFaIRO175_pLOEKS40e4PU1xmzkbBti8SXXYpcfcmnLV96LbclNM8pZMmlGufgHfGYG2eXeLfno-X-ZFldVYbVAV01NGhJa0O5/s400/FINALCOVER.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298724481853343858" /><div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I was</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"> upset that our first feature designs were rejected so badly, but also was happy with my final design (above). I played with many different types of "green" (the color and photos of money). I originally wanted to have stacks of "green" and have the headline stagger on top of the stacks, but that idea fell through as I was designing, so I went with a banner-like look on the top of the first page and used the type "of the" in a jumbled way compared to the other words to illustrate our unstable economy. I also made the photos of the men bigger for these spreads because I realized how important it is that readers see who is giving them advice. I incorporated the green throughout the piece to keep it cohesive, and I'm happy with the outcome.</span></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 232px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBwRMb-e-ksrWD0nDeF8K7Bh8HwBXZt4KRZMqnBlcZ-OaMw3SuYFpa-CnFtpq26S7Z1x3h0Pxe0G9jz6SVRdx_w5tgpdvaNpWI8QtHMpFd0p7HWr4Pcgjz_TWGQ5Elyiv3T70dgDxaokZm/s400/ECONOMYFINAL_Page_1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298730220309694866" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 233px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifOkjYehS1PyIRW0hYhBZ1Ku2z11Pf8wQJgGiNKxrbXm1EAw68TA5Dekeshpd4WrtYUe-zSbuVADKR_nrgmZw9dCZXQ2zqy0ZR0mIm68N1-mSXKXJTWm2Iy0qAtAZLhyciQxzULudqzxL2/s400/FEATURE22.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298728230513304242" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">I also did a graffiti assignment this week, where I took photos of different typography and spelled my name. I was especially interested in the collage technique, because it is something I've been doing for years. I love making cards for every holiday for my friends and family members. I usually use the collage technique when I make them, as well as when I put photos on my bedroom wall. Another example of this is when I made my older brother a collage of baby pictures and remnants of his childhood for his high school graduation. Below is an example of the collage designs I'm interested in. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 293px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYe5ZdaQz0zUniYjr9oNJFpEJuW4FHlc5aaeFG0KAM9NpPyUHcRwRxqhUPhXoEA7lSFnKfR5K9YekuJErSFW6y8lSMhXEMMRrPbGPZm_Gx9srUmr-l9-9Zm0CyRggAeJ0quprWg5e9R4vt/s400/960195566_9cce9b6d55_b.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298748976645058258" /><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/">MagCulture</a></span></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">This</span><http://magculture.com/blog><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">, Jeremy Leslie says he miraculously has more space to blog now, without deleting any of his previous material...and write about the closure of magazines, including </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><a href="http://www.dominomag.com/">Domino</a></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">, which is owned by Meredith Corporation. The only thing I could think of were demo c.d.s, televisions and MTV, which I knew probably everyone else in the class would be thinking of as well. I decided to make a collage of c.d.s and take a photo of it myself, which is probably the most unoriginal thing I could have done, and I was a little embarrassed when I saw everyone else's covers Tuesday in lecture. While trying to think of a good cover read, I wanted to come up with something that would roll off the tongue easily so I decided to go with "Singing for the Screen". I later thought that the picture I chose didn't really go well with that title, but it was too late for me to change it, because I thought that as I was driving to the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">VOX</span> office at 8:30 Monday morning. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"> </span><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-gU6T-oohH5q6hED_cVln2r5axwQqUK03fhK17iB39QXUvt-mb6JuwgvQTiudbhhwWFBvyKwzTUfn8witX8YAvzQyoIFH0Noge2092jjwnzN1qlu5p4n5gtXYLiJXLfKLSTOfxuvXLjON/s400/FINALCOVER.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296875953467992018" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 344px; height: 400px; " /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I originally struggled with the font color I wanted to use, which was a deep red, but it blended too much with the photo and made it unreadable. I decided to go with white after that and keep the VOX heading white as well. I was not pleased at all with my final product and I am very glad we have the chance for a redesign, because I am determined to come up with something WAY better than my first attempt. I made the mistake of choosing an idea and not giving myself enough time to really think about it and maybe come up with a better concept altogether. In the future I am going to sit down and take a good, long look at my design and tweak, tweak, tweak it. I am in the process of redesigning the cover and I think it's coming along quite nicely. I have a brand new concept and am looking forward to posting it soon.<br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I didn't struggle as much with this feature design as I did the cover design. I did the feature before I did the cover and I spent a lot more time on it than the cover. I initially wanted to do something with the faces on money, but again, I thought everyone would do that and that it was not a very creative or unique idea, so I decided to do an illustration of the stock market crash and incorporate the headline with the graph. I used the graph to make the "A" in "FACES", which I really loved, and used both pages of the spread for the illustration. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjokXKzQ3bvqjMkxhSD0lhDsb1RUbs4PhkTTYk5LmB2q7tiZWHfUfMWy3HNHxcWXNtP-tKEkDkUh87dPG4n9QqwGhTKJrYABevqra9Lm5Z-C5hxEozvc_Kv5PFavT0yeNP0YFF2qEbu_BNA/s400/Untitled-5.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296876848495581730" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 233px; " /></div><div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuHZdxhJNLoL4iURxYM4lOKX1LHTWvNfYwuHkvGyj5QITZ6sZBkzD1Wq_-HVgJSFNIdtSSigTaiISMYeSMC36J0F9jWkkFc0qijJZJqnd155OEeRiNOvlqKFjepZlwzieWmQsy3b4s1f5/s400/Untitled-52.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296878316203700930" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 233px; " /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">At first, I struggled with making the line on the graph really stand out, but then I asked my roommates what they thought of my design and they gave me some helpful tips. I have really learned this year to ask others of their opinions on my designs because it can only benefit my designs. The only thing I struggled with on this feature was finding a great place to showcase the photos of the men featured. Looking back, I could have done that in a nice way by doing my initial money idea and putting their faces on the first page with the headline. Overall, I was pleased with this layout, but I have many different ideas for the redesign, which I will post early next week. <br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; ">I have just begun the photo assignments and love them so I'm looking forward to continuing them, as I love photography, but am not very good at it. I was especially interested in the heroic realism era because I think this could really apply to America's current situation with the economy and the war as well. This type of illustrating and presenting design could make a huge impact on our society, because now is the time when people are looking for guidance and help to get through their economic struggles. Publications across the country have given President Obama the image of a hero, and that is exactly what heroic realism did. I think design with a little more modern twist on heroic realism could be something people would like.</span></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZVaJzbQOXeNM_byhtUEL75UxDSo8AvNqmbWll0farg6iRaQMA9FzykMD5XLv_38A2vb0N3057TKwmysvsnHzLnr5XW0_XDiz3pKJSBdw_qlOxnOTYjMovlRttT3i39Wz2Izwiw2ATfwqG/s400/REALISM.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296904720903706210" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Another point I wanted to touch on was the comment Jan made about coming out of this experience with a cash of ideas and resources. I have never thought so much like the way I do now (like a true designer), nor do I have anything close to a collection of design ideas and resources I can turn to. This makes me excited/nervous for the "real world". Excited because I have this opportunity to obtain that cash of ideas, but nervous because I feel like I'm somewhat behind. Learning about the different eras in design and art has really opened my eyes to the history of design and I think it will only make me more confident as the semester and my life a designer progresses. After all, I am here to design, so I need to know everything I can about it.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px;">You Can't Miss</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I recently found an online portfolio called <a href="http://www.emotionslive.co.uk/portfolio4.html">"Emotions by Mike"</a>. Mike is a graphic designer who began in 1998 and has since worked in many different designing areas, but is now doing freelance designing. It's very colorful and bright, which can be helpful to someone having a rough day or just a case of the Mondays. He likes to use big illustrations that come off the page and they are all very in-your-face, which I think is fun and somewhat like the designs I try to create. It's just a resource if you're trying to find a kind of different design than you would normally do, because I know that's what attracted me to it. The artwork is copyrighted, so I could only pull small images from the site, but enjoy!</span></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 94px; height: 55px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPQ9UsULr56DRi5q8jxXQky80abnj1X7a-a-YDuooApjuUfqiwEaRzJuW0xnntg_fQooL1mwfcjOjd4Nu8THgF5AnYSxdpMny-x7wjBlrkK30-7rq2u0L9nZI3i_ePrstnNB70LHuksuGq/s400/20051209205810.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296907023539311250" /><br /></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 94px; height: 55px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFdyFSS1LRwuhcr4PfmIMVScq1X6kaosUm2sZEBu2ES4_gKbdUshg1XFpZlqmEV3n3ddh07-BMIZ-_oL-4VKLWpzVFQT2SvWWeUS-sgh-1Zm6lSaiVsptJxLwRxFDERpojb7fF6-afMv8h/s400/20051114214903.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296907124036685794" /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://magculture.com/blog/">MagCulture</a></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><http://www.magculture.com/blog></http://www.magculture.com/blog></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><www.magculture.com/blog></www.magculture.com/blog></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The blog I'm covering this semester is one of Jeremy Leslie, at www.magculture.com/blog, who is the Executive Creative Director at the London-based publisher John Brown. He is also the author of the books "magCulture" and "Issues". </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; ">This week, he actually ran out of space on his blog and promises to be back shortly, but with his remaining space, posted about the current magazine trends in other countries. He write about magazines using black as the color for the cover, and how some go against it, but how he thinks they are great. I agree with this completely, because I think it makes the magazine look really powerful and especially if it's a very important issue of the mag, it can really make an impact on readers and even just those browsing the news stands. The recent issue of </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; "><a href="http://www.people.com">People</a></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; "> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; ">has a black backdrop on the cover and it looks stunning.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"> </span><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><br /></span></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 285px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg533-py3ykuJA6PRVcS3_kyW5w43-t_lvy75DePDC9_nA6xwnbe3w9aChHb_h3RK-tyssu4dtD33h3jPHKO-E8bkOpT-iH-J7ZpswEuGMlGStuD7lePKkp2eJeLVqnN3OHzjOFvOJR6_nn/s400/barack_obama_michelle_obama_people_magazine_inauguration_2009_january_cover.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5296908742494344130" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I agree with Jeremy Leslie and think more mags should start doing this. Don't overuse it of course, but definitely an issue that really has something to say should have a cover which really grabs readers and makes them want to buy it. Let's face it, sometimes people buy magazines simply because it looks pretty, as we saw in some of the judging in Tuesday's class.
